Mid-Watch in Verse: USS Bush (DD-529) — 5 Comments

  1. PA Lilly was a family member and I can affirm that he wrote the Fire When Ready, Gridley correspondence – it’s not just a meme attached to his name!

  2. I had the honor of serving as a navigation quartermaster on the bridge of the USS Hancock under Captain Foss.
And after seeking out his whereabouts for a long time I was thrilled finally to find this USS Bush entry by Foss
which answered a lot for me about the life and times of this fine proud Officer and my ultimate Navy hero who indeed fulfilled the aspirations of those many like myself who wanted to emulate this person’s footsteps but could not . If any member of his family is able to read this , (Janice, Ada) I would love to hear anything more about VA Newton P Foss up until his departure in 1979

    Sincerely,

    Rick Rogers 1969 1971, Qm3 , USS Hancock

    • Rick,

Thank you for letting me know about finding my post about Admiral Foss, and thank you for your service on the Hancock!

      Dave Johnson

  3. Captain Lilly did write the letter which I typed serving aboard the Gridley. He was an incredible CO and a quick wit. No finer ship handler did I ever see.
