I find them interesting because in some cases they are not very interesting!! Others are quite interesting.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.socpsy.com\/casks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/USSPatterson-Deck-Logs.pdf\"> In this PDF document, I included a few deck logs that were hand-written while in dry dock or moored.<\/a> \u00a0The last few are from times when the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socpsy.com\/casks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/patterson-log-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1155 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socpsy.com\/casks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/patterson-log-pic-300x133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.socpsy.com\/casks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/patterson-log-pic-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.socpsy.com\/casks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/patterson-log-pic-768x340.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.socpsy.com\/casks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/patterson-log-pic-1024x453.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.socpsy.com\/casks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/patterson-log-pic.jpg 1196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><em>Patterson<\/em> was underway. My father-in-law, Erwin A. Schroder, signed many of these as one of the deck officers. The captain and navigator also signed off on the logs. At the bottom of page 5, the captain was Walter. A. Hering. \u00a0In April, 1945, Hering was on board the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Hazelwood_(DD-531)\"><em>USS Hazelwood<\/em> (DD-531)<\/a> to relieve their captain\u00a0Cmdr\u00a0Volckert Douw. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socpsy.com\/casks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/USS_Hazelwood_DD-531_after_Kamikaze_hit_1945.jpg\">The <em>Hazelwood<\/em> was hit by kamikaze planes killing both men and 75 other crewmen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Note that at the bottom of page 4 you can see a bit of the stamp indicating that the log had been declassified.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I continue my research on the history of the USS Patterson (DD-392), I scan as many deck logs as I can locate.
