USS Patterson (DD-392) Deck Logs
As I continue my research on the history of the USS Patterson (DD-392), I scan as many deck logs as I can locate. I find them interesting because in some cases they are not very interesting!! Others are quite interesting. In this PDF document, I included a few deck logs that were hand-written while in dry dock or moored. The last few are from times when the Patterson was underway. My father-in-law, Erwin A. Schroder, signed many of these as one of the deck officers. The captain and navigator also signed off on the logs. At the bottom of page 5, the captain was Walter. A. Hering. In April, 1945, Hering was on board the USS Hazelwood (DD-531) to relieve their captain Cmdr Volckert Douw. The Hazelwood was hit by kamikaze planes killing both men and 75 other crewmen.
Note that at the bottom of page 4 you can see a bit of the stamp indicating that the log had been declassified.
Hi Dave,
I have PDF copies of the deck logs. I think their typewriter was out of commission more often than not. They make for hard reading, but if you still don’t have a full set, let me know.
Best regards,
Kirk
Greetings, Kirk!
I’d love to have copies of the logs. I have a vague recollection that the 1943 logs were all hand-written. I remember being glad when entries were printed!!

Hi Dave,
Send me a note at my email address and I’ll share a link. The zip file is quite large.
Best regards,
Kirk
